Following the 2024 US presidential elections, the military and political leadership of northeast Syria, including Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) Co-Chair Leyla Qehreman and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi, congratulated President Trump on his victory.
The SDF and SDC had extensive contacts during the previous Trump Administration, including frequent contacts between Commander Abdi and the President, as well as an in-person meeting between former SDC Executive President (and current Head of Foreign Relations) Ilham Ahmed and President Trump.
Commander Abdi stated that he, “looks forward to working together as we did in the past, we are ready to strengthen our partnership and provide stability to the region.”
Co-Chair Leyla Qehreman said, “We hope his leadership will help end conflicts in the Middle East, resolve the Syrian Crisis, and enhance global cooperation against terrorism for peace and security.”
The SDF, SDC, and Autonomous Administration and the United States have maintained consistently strong and cooperative relations over the course of several US administrations, both Democratic and Republican, with both parties taking steps to strengthen relations over the years.
