EUPHRATES RIVER, Syria — Following months of escalating Turkish aggression that threatened the stability of the Tishreen dam, one of northeast Syria’s most vital infrastructure projects, the Global Coalition has brokered a ceasefire between Turkey, Turkish-backed militias, and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The agreement comes after sustained drone strikes around the Tishreen Dam—a critical source of electricity for millions in the region—which drew international condemnation. Under the terms of the ceasefire, the SDF will withdraw from positions around the dam. Responsibility for maintaining security will be handed over to the local Asayish forces, while the Global Coalition will retain a monitoring presence to ensure the ceasefire’s full implementation.

Tensions have intensified in the region since the fall of the Assad regime in December, with Turkey launching a series of military operations across northeast Syria. The Tishreen Dam became a focal point of the conflict, where more than 30 civilians were reportedly killed in drone strikes during peaceful protests, and hundreds more were wounded. Footage posted on Turkish military social media accounts appeared to show drone strikes targeting gatherings of civilians, including groups of people dancing.

The ceasefire agreement has been widely welcomed by communities across northeast Syria, where the dam serves as a lifeline for power and irrigation. Its preservation is seen as essential not only for local stability but also for Syria’s broader reconstruction efforts after more than a decade of war.

Analysts note that while the ceasefire marks a significant de-escalation, sustained peace will require a broader halt to hostilities and a political solution that addresses Turkish military involvement in Syrian affairs.
