The city of Hasakah in northeast Syria still bears the scars of the fierce fighting that erupted in January 2022, following a large-scale ISIS assault on the al-Sina’a detention facility.
In response to intelligence suggesting that ISIS was attempting to reestablish its presence in the area, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), and Internal Security Forces (ISF) launched a major security operation on the morning of August 30, 2025.
More than 3,000 personnel took part in the 14-hour operation, which targeted neighborhoods surrounding al-Sina’a Prison and the city’s outskirts.
A total of 51 ISIS members were arrested, including individuals reportedly involved in attacks on civilians and security personnel. Intelligence also indicated that some of the detained militants were planning coordinated assaults on both al-Sina’a Prison and al-Hol Camp.
Security forces also seized a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, and logistical equipment, including dozens of rifles, hundreds of magazines, large quantities of ammunition, and grenades.
While Syria remains in a state of political uncertainty amid ongoing negotiations between Damascus and regional authorities, the Autonomous Administration and its security forces continue their counterterrorism efforts. Their aim is to prevent ISIS from exploiting the instability to regroup or expand its influence.
