Northeast Syria — US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack and CENTCOM Commander Admiral Cooper visited northeast Syria in early October to hold high-level talks with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) leadership, including co-commanders General Mazloum Abdi and General Rohilat Afrin.

The visit underscores American efforts to revitalize a political roadmap for Syria, aligning with President Trump’s evolving strategy in the region. The goal of which, according to Ambassador Barrack, is to foster unity among Syrians across ethnic and political divides, while maintaining Syrian unity.

Ambassador Barrack shared news of the visit on social media, calling the discussions “substantive” and highlighting the forward momentum.

The trip signals Washington’s ongoing support for its Kurdish-led partners in the fight against ISIS remnants, while also navigating complex diplomatic relations with Turkey, and the new Syrian interim government led by Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus.

The discussions included counterterrorism cooperation, stabilization efforts in liberated areas, and long-term governance frameworks in northeast Syria. U.S. officials emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue among all Syrian communities.

General Mazloum Abdi welcomed the visit, calling it an important step toward ensuring stability and peace for all Syrians.
